Abstract
A composite bearing comprises a steel backing layer, an intermediate layer of a high heat conductivity metal, a relatively thin barrier layer of a metal resistant to indium diffusion, and a surface layer of an indium containing bearing alloy metal, said layers being uniformly bonded to each other. The intermediate layer may be copper, silver, copper-lead, copper-lead-tin or aluminium alloy. The barrier layer may be of the iron group, nickel iron or cobalt and have a thickness of approximately 0.00005 to 0.0001 inch. The indium containing bearing alloy metal may have a thickness of less than 0.005 inch. A flash layer of silver may be included between the intermediate layer and the barrier layer. A specified bearing alloy is composed of approximately 95 per cent lead and 5 per cent indium. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an alloy containing approximately 75 per cent copper, 24 per cent lead and 0.5 per cent tin. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
