Abstract

654,736. Resistance strain gauges ; wire and ribbon resistances. GUSTAFSSON, G. V. A., and HUGGENBERGER, A. U. Sept. 17, 1948, No. 24435. Convention date, Sept. 25, 1947. [Class 37] A strain gauge element, Fig. 1, embedded in an insulating mass 4 consists of a plurality of straight, uniformly tensioned, parallel wires 1 for example of cupro-nickel, bridged by wires 2 of different material, for example copper, or the same material but of greater crosssection and connecting the straight wires 1 in series. A modification, Fig. 2, includes outermost wires 5 of different or the same material as the wires 1 but of such length as to provide overall temperature compensation in the use of the gauge with . a particular test specimen. The Specification includes assembly directions and details, Fig. 3 (not shown), showing that the gauges may be produced in batches of three or more. The insulating mass or strip 4 which completely surrounds the resistance element may be applied or formed by spraying, casting, melting, vulcanization or polymerization. The strip 4 is cemented to the test specimen by using the same material as the strip itself is composed of. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states (1) transparent films may be used so that it may be observed whether the gauge is uniformly in contact with the test specimen ; (2) coloured films may be used for gauges provided with different kinds of wire or gauges without temperature compensation. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
