Abstract
Sea water and other solutions containing recoverable magnesium salts are treated with dry calcined dolomite particles, the major proportion by weight of said particles being of a size such that they will sink through the solution and any unreactive particles will settle quickly to the bottom, the precipitate of magnesium hydroxide is washed and filtered, and the resulting paste is calcined, e.g. at 1400 DEG C., to yield the oxide. Thus, the calcined dolomite may have a particle size within the range minus 65 to plus 100 mesh per linear inch, or varying from approximately 100 mesh to a coarse granular state and obtained from dolomite of 1/2 inch mesh prior to calcination, which may be effected at about 1200 DEG C. An apparatus is shown consisting of four shallow conicalbottomed tanks provided with rotating rakes. The dry calcined dolomite, suitably at 600 DEG C., is fed to the first tank containing sea water which has been pretreated with slaked lime or slaked dolomite to remove carbon dioxide and bicarbonates. Ferric chloride, chlorine and hypochlorites may also have been added. Impurities &c. settle to, and are removed from, the bottom of the tank, and the precipitated magnesium hydroxide and sea water overflow to the second (or thickener) tank, from which the settled precipitate passes in succession through two wash tanks, and thence to a filter, and a calciner.
