Abstract
641,135. Snap-action switches. DIAMOND H. SWITCHES, Ltd. June 19, 1948, No. 16556. [Class 38(v)] Indexing mechanism for a rotary, manually - operated, switch, comprises a spring-loaded detent i engaging between the teeth of a star-wheel a mounted on the operating shaft b, one or more of the star-wheel teeth having means for forcing the detent i outwardly more than normal when moving from the corresponding switch position. As shown, a disc p having a longer tooth r masks a tooth of the star-wheel whereby the detent i must be further deflected against its spring f and the increased resistance to rotation causes a slight delay in the switch operation at that position. This is desirable when switching from one 50-cycle circuit to another of opposite polarity since, if the switching time is less than 1/100 sec., the presence of arcing would produce a short-circuit. The resistance may be further increased by a leafspring u which is compressed by the detent i when the latter is engaged by the tip of the tooth r. To ensure correct positioning of the shaft b, a spring-loaded arm j having a flat surface o engages the tips of two adjacent star-wheel teeth.
