Abstract

635,841. Photographic emulsions. KODAK, Ltd., DAVEY, E. P., and KNOTT, E. B. May 13, 1947, No. 12934. [Class 98 (ii)] A photographic silver halide emulsion is prepared by forming in the absence of ammonia and in one or more stages, silver salt grains consisting at least partly of a silver salt which is more soluble in water than is silver bromide, converting the whole of such grains to silver bromide or iodobromide, and if the silver iodide content of the emulsion is less than 6 per cent by weight calculated on the total silver halide, treating the grains with an iodine compound to bring the silver iodide content up to at least 6 per cent by weight, with ripening (preferably in the absence of ammonia) or without ripening, and then either washing out some of the watersoluble salts or washing out the whole of the water-soluble salts followed by addition of water-soluble salts such as water-soluble chloride or bromide. The silver salt grains may be formed in a colloid binder containing little or no sulphur sensitizers, e.g. inert gelatin, cellulose esters or ethers, and resins (e.g. polyvinyl acetate). The pH of the emulsion may be between 4.5 and 7.0. The iodide content of the final emulsion may be 10 per cent, 20 per cent, or more. The emulsions, after exposure, may be developed in an " internal " developer. In example 1, aqueous solutions of KCl and AgNO 3 are simultaneously run into an aqueous solution of inert gelatin and KCI, an aqueous solution of KBr and KI is added, the emulsion is ripened for 20 minutes at 45‹ C., inert gelatin is added, and the emulsion is again ripened, set, shredded, washed free of all soluble salts, and, after addition of aqueous KCI, diluted. Example 2 is similar, except that after the simultaneous addition of the KCI and AgN0 3 solutions, an aqueous solution of KBr is added followed by ripening, an aqueous solution of KBr and KI is added followed by ripening, and an aqueous solution of KBr is added followed by ripening. In example 3, aqueous AgNO 3 is slowly added to aqueous inert gelatin, solutionsof KCNS and AgN0 3 are simultaneously added, and a solution of KBr and KI is added. Inert gelatine is added, the emulsion set, shredded washed, and melted, and inert gelatine and aqueous KBr are added. In example 4, aqueous solutions of sodium carbonate and AgN0 3 are simultaneously added to an aqueous solution of inert gelatin, and the remaining procedure is similar to example 3. Specifications 581,772, 581,773 and 581,789 are referred to.
