Abstract
628,974. Stuffing-box substitutes. WILKINSON, F. C. W., and CRANE PACKING, Ltd. Aug. 13, 1946, No. 24074. [Class 122(v)] A sealing device for effecting a seal between rotary and non-rotary members, comprises a rubbing collar device wherein the pressure on either side of the sealing washer is substantially balanced. A shaft 1 has mounted thereon a sleeve 2 for rotation therewith. A ring 7 of deformable material is pressed on to the sleeve 2 by a ring 12 which has projections 12a engaging slots 11a in a sleeve 11 pressed axially by a spring 8 and engaging a washer 13 to press the sleeve 7 against a washer 4 and the washer surface 4a into contact with a sealing surface 5a on a stationary sealing member 5. The washer 4 is stepped at 4b to provide a pressure surface to oppose the pressure acting on the opposite end of the washer. The sealing member 5 is provided with a cooling jacket 17 which is supplied with cooling liquid, some of which may pass though holes to lubricate the surface 5a. A groove is provided (not shown in Fig. 1A) in the housing about the sleeve 2, which may be filled with plastic packing in the event of fire. Specification 572,278 is referred to.
