Abstract

627,863. Melting-furnaces. SCHLEHR, W. R. Oct. 1, 1946, No. 29279. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXIII and XXXV] Describes an air lock substantially the same as that described in Specification 627,585. Reference is also made to a three-section resistance- or inductionheated glass furnace as shown, wherein a drawing chamber 68 is under pressure of a liquid head 69 maintained by flow over the top of a tube 78 in an intermediate refining chamber 67 to the bottom of which glass is fed from a melting chamber 66 through a passage 74. When the glass at 69 drops below the adjustable electrode 83, raw material is supplied from a feeder 72 under control of a device similar to that described in Specification 627,585, baffles 75 are provided in the melting chamber 66, and the refining chamber 67 has an outlet 87 to atmosphere or to a vacuum source.
