Abstract
622,821. Valves. CAMPBELL, C., PARKER, W. G. S., and WHITE, C. W. GROVE-. Dec. 1, 1945, No. 32541. [Class 135] A combined vent and snifter valve for a pressurized aircraft fuel tank is provided with a two-part casing 1, Fig. 1, having an inlet 4 from the tank and an outlet 5 to the atmosphere. The vent valve comprises a spring-urged closure member 17 which coacts with the depending lip 10 of a rubber &c. washer 6 clamped between the casing parts. The washer 6, which is largely unsupported on its underside, is connected by integral arms 9, Fig. 2, with a disc 7 having a depending lip 11 constituting the snifter valve which co-operates with the member 17. When the tank is not under pressure, the member 17 is held on its seat by the spring 14, whilst the disc 7 is freely supported by the arms 9 with that portion of the lip 11 opposite the arms just touching the member 17 to permit the tank to breathe in air. On the pressure in the tank rising, the disc 7 is pressed on to the member 17 until final closure takes place and any further increase in pressure is governed by the spring 14 which, on the pressure reaching a predetermined value, permits the member 17 to open and vent the tank. In the event of ice forming on the sealing surfaces, it is broken up by the pressure in the tank acting on the disc 7 and the washer 6 and rolling the lips 10, 11 across the surface of the member 17.
