[Classes 4 and 114] [Also in Group V] A method of moulding a propeller blade from fibrous laminµ 2 ... 9 comprises cutting laminµ to a size smaller than the cross-section of the corresponding moulding space, assembling the laminae provided with an adhesive to form. a core, arranging a composite skin formed by bonding fibrous laminµ 1 to sheet metal 11 around the core with the metal outermost, the size and shape of the core and skin being such that after the compression the laminae and the skin fill the mould, and applying pressure or pressure and heat to mould the article. The fibrous laminae for the core and the skin may be organic or inorganic, e.g. wood, textile fabric, paper or pulp and the laminµ forming the skin may be of the same material. The sheet metal may be tinned steel, tinned copper, brass, aluminium or aluminium alloy. Intermediary fibrous laminµ may be arranged between the core and the skin and additional fibrous material such as pulp may be provided as a filler particularly at bulging parts of the article. The skin laminae may be of natural density or they can be densified, by compression, before they are bonded to the metal or during the bonding. Preferably, synthetic resin adhesives are used and they may contain natural or synthetic rubber or gum.. The skin laminµ may be bonded to the metal with a thermosetting adhesive and the adhesive for gluing the core laminµ together may be cold setting. A skin may be pre-shaped before assembly with the core. The article may be hollow with a composite skin on its outer or inner surface or both. The parent Specification refers to aerofoils, struts and spars for aircraft.
