Abstract
587,076. Chucks. BLOOD, P. Oct. 18, 1944, No. 20189. [Class 83 (iii)] Collets for lathes &c. with spindles bored to a morse or other slow taper are made with longitudinal slots extending over substantially the whole length and with an annular groove engaged by a flange ori a screw cap. The collet, Fig. 1, has tapered surface 1, slots 4 and a cylindrical end part 2 with strengthening flange 3. The other end has flanges 7, 8 defining a groove 6. In a modification, Fig. 4, the parts 2, 3 are dispensed with and the slots 4 extend alternately from opposite ends. The collet is actuated by a screw cap 13 with flange 14 engaging the groove 6, and tommy holes 15. A sleeve may be employed to compress the collet to enable the flange 14 to be engaged in the groove 6. In modified forms of screw caps, the flange may be grooved to receive a spring ring or may be replaced by a solid annulus seated in a recess and held in place by burring over the edge thereof. In a further form, the groove 6 is wide enough to take a loose ring on the collet engaging the outer edge of the cap flange.
