Abstract

584,475. Valve amplifying circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and MORTLOCK, A. Nov. 28, 1944, No. 23729. [Class 40 (v)] An amplifier having a forward path, whose gain increases with frequency, is provided with feedback path including a cathode follower, and means to vary the gain of the feedback stage, so that the overall gain of the system at low frequencies approximates to that of the forward path, but tends to a constant value at high frequencies, the turning point varying with the frequency applied. As described the forward amplifier has two stages, coupled by the R.C. network 7, and the output is taken through network 8. The feedback path is coupled to the output terminals by the network 24, 25, 26 and comprises a variable-mu valve 18, with a potentiometer 19 partially shunted by a relatively low resistance 20 as load in its cathode circuit. The output of the valve 18 is applied through the network 21, 22, 23 to the bias resistance 11 in the cathode circuit of the valve 5. The desired characteristic. is obtained by biassing valve 18 in accordance with the log of the incoming frequency by means of a device 28 supplied with a variable frequency input which may be the frequency to be amplified.
