Abstract

580,571. Drills; chucks; sockets. MILLS, A. April 25, 1944, No. 7701. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A screw-holding screwdriver comprises a stem 14 terminating in a blade 15 to engage the screw A and passing through a hollow stem 10 formed at the front with a slotted screwholder 12 and at the rear with a housing 11 containing a spring 20 acting on a collar 17 on the stem 14 to force the blade 15 into the screw-head slot, in which it is locked by means of a sleeve 22 rotatably mounted on the housing 11 and guided for slight forward movement by a helical slot 25 engaging a peg 24 on the housing causing a cam-edged slot 23 in the sleeve to engage behind a stud 18 on the collar 17. The sleeve and housing are enclosed by a knurled outer shell 27. In a modification, Fig. 7, the screw is gripped on the blade 44 by the fingers 40 carried by the housing 41 which contains a spring 46 engaging a collar 47 on the stem of the blade 44 urging the latter forward and he parts are locked by a rotatable sleeve 50 having an angled slot 51 engaging a pin 48 on the collar 47 and an extension 52 acting to close the fingers. The invention is stated to be applicable to breast, brace or hand drills &c. for driving screws or holding and driving rotary bits such as drills or augers, the latter such as a twist drill 54, Fig. 8, being provided with a countersunk head 55 with slot 56.
