Abstract
Thiophan-3-one carboxylic acid esters are obtained by ring-forming condensation of esters of b -thioglycollylpropionic acid in the presence of an alkaline condensing agent. Specified condensing agents are sodium alcoholates, alkali metals and alkali metal amides. In examples, a mixture of the ethyl esters of thiophan-3-one-2 - carboxylic acid and thiophan - 3 - one - 4 - carboxylic acid is obtained (1) by treating b -thioglycollylpropionic acid diethylester in dry ethereal solution with a dry ethereal suspension of sodamide at 25-30 DEG C., treating the reaction mixture with a mixture of ice and glacial acetic ester and saturating it with salt before extracting the product with ether; (2) by treating a solution of b -thioglycollylpropionic acid diethyl ester in dry toluene with a suspension of amorphous sodium ethylate in dry toluene at 18 DEG C., completing the reaction by raising the temperature to 40-50 DEG C. and treating the reaction mixture as in (1); (3) as in (1) replacing the sodamide by sodium ethylate. Thiophan-3-one is obtained by saponifying the above esters with alkali and decarboxylating the resulting acids by distillation.
