Abstract

A material capable of forming a stable gel with water is prepared by reacting a conjugated diolefine with the cis form of an unsaturated dibasic acid or acid ester or anhydride thereof, treating the resulting product with an oxygenated organic solvent to remove low molecular weight products and treating the residual high molecular weight products with an aqueous solution of a basic metal compound or an onium base to form a salt gel, which is preferably washed free from soluble material and dried by heating in vacuo. Olefines specified are butadiene 1,3, piperylene, isoprene, 1,2-, 1,3-, 1,4- and 2,3-dimethylbutadiene 1,3, the trimethylbutadienes, chloroprene, cyclopentadiene 1,3 and cyclohexadiene-1,3. The acids may be maleic or citraconic acid. The condensation-polymerization reaction may be effected at room temperatures or higher, e.g. 40-53 DEG C., preferably in the liquid phase. The basic metal compound may be alkali or alkaline earth metal oxides, hydroxides, or carbonates. Salts of other metals may be prepared by double decomposition of the alkali or alkaline earth metal salt with an aqueous solution of aluminium nitrate, silver nitrate or nickel chloride. The products may be used as protective colloids in the preparation of gels, emulsions, suspensoids and foams. In the example, piperylene and a solution of maleic anhydride in benzene are mixed in a flask fitted with a reflux condenser. After reaction had ceased, alcohol was added to the mixture and the high molecular weight products (10-15 per cent) were filtered off and washed with hot water. The product was heated on a steam bath with sodium hydroxide until a stiff gel was formed which was washed with water and dried in vacuo.
