Abstract

537,364. Fluid-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 22, 1940, No. 10750. Convention date, June 22, 1939. [Class 38 (v)] In a liquid-blast switch employing a current limiting resistance 17 shunting the main arc between the fixed and movable contacts 11, 7, the reduced current through the resistance being subsequently interrupted at an arc between contact 11 and an auxiliary contact 19, the movable contact 7 carries a chamber 8 which operates as a piston in a cylinder 9 having a series of perforations 13, which are covered by the piston 8 after a.contacttravel which is sufficient to prevent re-ignition of the extinguished arc. The piston has apertures 16, 18 for the'blast for the main arc and for the subsequently-established resistance-are respectively, the apertures 16 being subsequently partially closed by cylinder 9 so as to concentrate the blast at apertures 18. The housing 6 is mounted above a similar housing on a base containing operating mechanism, the housings being oil-filled.
