Abstract

523,870. Boiler furnaces. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., and LULY, E. L. Jan. 17, 1939, No. 1641. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] In a boiler having a furnace 4 from which gases entraining slag above fusion point flow through an open pass 5 to a superheater 18, the gases after flowing, over the superheater are returned to the open pass, over a load range greater than that in which slagging of the superheater is liable to occur, by a fan 30 delivering the gases in quantities regulated by the degree of superheat. The fan may be run at constant speed, the quantity of gases delivered being controlled by dampers 33. Adjustable nozzles 34 ensure a high speed delivery of the return gases. The superheat may be further controlled by a damper 21 in a byepass 20 which is normally closed but which may be opened to reduce the superheat without increasing the quantity of recirculated gases. The gases flow over feedheaters 23, 25 and an air heater 31 on their way to the induced draft fan 32. The furnace 4 is separated from the open pass 5 by a transverse water wall 3 which may be connected at its lower end to vertical headers 16 outside the side water walls 8.
