515,123. Automatic control systems. SHEVLIN, J. T., (Siemens Apparate und Maschinen Ges.). May 24, 1938, No. 15524. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Groups. XX and XXXVIII] Steering.-To correct for drift of an air or other craft a pendulous gyroscope K, controlled by known means to indicate the course above ground in relation to the longitudinal axis of the craft, influences an automatic rudder control to balance out the drift either directly or through the absolute direction indicator. As shown a moving electrode in a casing 4 containing an electrolyte is positioned in relation to fixed electrodes in accordance with the drift angle, and, through additional coils on a rotary magnet D' operated through electrodes controlled by the compass 8, applies a correction to the rudder control 14, 15, S (which may include a damping gyroscope 16 responsive to angular velocity of course deviation). Alternatively the gyroscope K may adjust the setting of the compass through a differential connection with the course setting means 10.
