Abstract

514,320. Centrifugal gas cleaners. HOLMES & CO., Ltd., W. C. (Naamlooze Vennootschap Machinefabriek Jaffa, voorheen L., Smulders & Co.). May 2, 1938, No. 13071. [Class 23] Gas is freed from suspended particles of solids and liquids during its inward passage through a rotor 3 in the form of a cage or drum having a wall constituted by a number of slots or blades 4 which are pivoted to turn freely under centrifugal action. The blades 4 have pivots 5 engaging in apertures in the side walls of the rotor, and the radial motion of the blades is limited by outer and inner rings 6, 7. The rotor is enclosed by a casing 1, and in the form shown in Fig. 1 has a conical tube 8 to secure a constant rate of flow of the gas passing between the blades 4. An exhaust fan 10 is arranged in a separate casing at the end of the casing 1. The air is drawn into the casing 1 through the inlet 2 and passes inwards between the blades of the rotor to the space outside the conical tube 8. It is then drawn to the fan 10 through the extension 9 and discharged. The suspended particles are thrown out as the gas passes into the rotor and are collected by the hopper 15 and discharged through a rotary trap valve 16. The rotor 3 and the fan 10 may be driven at the same or different speeds by the belts 25, 27. A light current of clean air is passed continuously through the conical tube 8 to cool the inner bearing of the drum. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the conical tube 8 is replaced by a cylindrical tube 11, and passages 14 extend from this tube to the atmosphere so that air is supplied for cooling the bearing.
