Abstract

428,549. Cigarette-making machines. PODMORE, A., 58, Holborn Viaduct, London. Nov. 29, 1933, No. 33434. [Class 130] Filter tips adapted to be telescoped on to cigarettes are made by forming a continuous rod having axially spaced portions 11 of filter - tip material enclosed in a paper wrapper 12, Fig. 1, and severing the rod into lengths each comprising a tube having filter-tip material at one end and a space at the other. The severance may be effected midway of each tip and each space, as at a in Fig. 1, or adjacent to one end of each tip. As shown in Fig. 2, tipping material from a spool 10 is fed by rollers 14, 15 over a reciprocating table 17 mounted on parallel arms 18 pivoted at 19 and oscillated by a cross-head 119 mounted on cranks 20, 21 driven in unison. During the forward movement of the table, a length of tipping material is severed by a knife 24 carried by a mounting 23 on the crosshead, and is pressed by a roller 26 on a gummed section 13 of the wrapper web 12, which passes over the guide roller 27. The gum may be applied to the web by segments 30 on a roller 29 receiving adhesive from the roller 31 of a gumming device 32. The wrapper web with the filter tips is fed to a device for pasting the edge and to a folding and severing device for forming a continuous rod and severing it into lengths. Cork tips may be applied to the web before it reaches the gumming device 32. The wrapper web may consist of waxed paper, the sealing of the tube being effected by the application of heat, or wax may be applied to the web at positions corresponding to the tipping material. In a modification, Fig. 3, separate tips 35 are delivered to the web from a hopper 34 by gripper rolls 38 engaging the tips through slots 37 in the sides of the hopper shoot, and are pressed on the web by a grooved pressure roll 39.
