Abstract
374,941. Cooling oil &c. ; hollow cylinders. ELLIS, H. W., 55, Chalk Hill Road, Wembley Park, Middlesex, and BOTTOMLEY, R. W.; 59, Belmont Road, Ilford, Essex. March 18, 1931, No. 8391. [Classes 29 and 34 (i).] Apparatus for cooling engine lubricating oil or other liquids comprises cooled surfaces having relative rotary movement and between which the oil &c. is passed in a very thin layer, and scrapers for removing the oil, still in a liquid condition, from both surfaces. Preferably the surfaces comprise an internally cooled rotary drum 1 within a cooled cylindrical casing 2 separated by a very narrow oil space 3. The drum is fitted with an inner drum 11 and its wall is provided with deep and shallow helical ribs 23, 22 forming a winding channel for cooling-water &c. from an axial inlet 8 to an axial outlet 9, the outlet leading to a channel 53 in an end cover 26 of the casing. The casing is provided with longitudinal ribs or partitions 40 providing zig-zag channels from an inlet 38 to .an outlet communicating with the channel 53. The oil to be cooled is admitted through a passage 47, Fig. 9, cooled by the circulating water, and a further passage 43 with a widened opening. After flowing around the drum it is wiped off by a scraper 60 and delivered to an outlet branch 61, which may be water cooled. The scrapers engaging the fixed surface comprise spring-pressed strips 57 located in longitudinal recesses in the drum wall, and as they approach the fixed scraper 60 they are depressed gradually by engagement with inclined cam members 63 at the side of the fixed scraper. The water may flow in parallel through the drum and jacket. In a modification the drum surface is divided into sections by circumferential ribs, and the oil traverses the sections in series so as to prolong the treatment. The scraper on the casing is then divided so as to fit between the ribs, while the drum scrapers may be continuous.
