Abstract

Drying agents, having a high metal content, for use in paints, are produced by substituting the hydroxyl hydrogen as well as the carboxyl hydrogen of mono- or polybasic, mono- or polyhydroxy fatty acids, or their glycerine esters, or mixtures of both, by metals such as aluminium, lead, zinc, cobalt, copper, manganese or bismuth. The metal compounds may be prepared by reacting the hydroxy acids or their glycerine esters with metal compounds such as metal oxides or hydroxides. The reaction may be effected in the presence of saturated or unsaturated non-hydroxylated fatty acids, such as oleic or linoleic acids or of vegetable or animal oils or fats, such as linseed, ,olive or sesame oils or certain train oils, or of mixtures of such acids and oils. The presence of such materials during reaction renders the products soluble in the usual solvents such as turpentine oil, heavy benzine, &c., whereas the products obtained in their absence are not always so soluble. In examples (1) recinoleic acid, lactic acid and rapeseed oil are heated together and cobaltous hydroxide is added. A solid mass soluble in turpentine, and heavy benzine is obtained. (2) To a mixture of olein, glycollic acid, castor oil and olive or fish oil, cobaltous hydroxide is added. If desired, lead oxide, manganic hydroxide or the oxides or hydroxides of aluminium, zinc, copper or bismuth may be used instead of cobaltous hydroxide.ALSO:Drying agents, having a high metal content, for use in paints, are produced by substituting the hydroxyl hydrogen as well as the carboxyl hydrogen of mono- or polybasic, mono- or polyhydroxy fatty acids, or their glycerine esters, or mixtures of both by metals such as aluminium, lead, zinc, cobalt, copper, manganese or bismuth.
