Calcining furnaces; charges, agitating.-In an annular muffle calcining furnace, of the kind in which the means for securing and moving the rabble arms 10 are located in the central unheated space 2, the latter is surrounded by masonry of substantial thickness, e.g. 13¢ inches, which is formed with a horizontal slot 15, having sand seals 16, 17, in which the arms 10 move. The latter are detachably secured at 13 to a cross 11, which is carried by a vertical shaft 9 and is fitted with supports 18 carrying rollers running on a circular rail. The upper heating passage 3 extends completely round the furnace and receives at 19 heating gases which, after traversing the passage, pass by a connection 4 to the lower heating flue 5, which they traverse in the same direction. The lower flue 5 does not extend beneath the charging opening 7, the gases being taken off at 6 so as to leave unheated that part of the hearth supporting the freshly charged material. The arms 10 are rotated to move the material in counter-current to the travel of the heating gases.
