Abstract
258,325. Mitchell, F. B. June 15, 1925. Liquid lenses.-Lenses comprising a chamber having flexible walls, the convexity or concavity of which is maintained by a fluid under pressure, are provided with means for varying the quantity of fluid contained as desired in order to a,lter the focal length. The lenses consist of thin discs of glass B, C carried between the dished rings H, J. Between the discs B, C are situated rubber rings R, S and a tubular member L having openings into the interior of the lens. Fluid is supplied by the inlet tube L<1> and may be above or below the external pressure according to the focal length desired. When the lenses are used as spectacle lenses, the frame acts as the supply tube and the pressure is applied by a rubber ball P or by pressure rollers on the tube 0. In one modification, Fig. 4. one of the glass discs consists of a lens M and the fluid is utilized in conjunction with the flexible disc N to modify its focal length. In other modifications the discs may be of variable thickness to counteract for an irregular periphery or to modify the bending, or may be fitted with a supporting ring smaller in diameter than the discs so that pressure applied to the periphery may modify the focal length. The lenses may be used for telescopes, for projection apparatus or for windows.
