Description

SPECIFICATION Work bench The present invention relates to a new multiuse work bench with vice means.
According to the invention there is provided a work bench comprising vice means having three vice plates for gripping an object in the vice means and wherein the vice plates can be independently moved to contact the object.
The invention provides a new work bench which may be used to grip various different objects. The work bench includes three similar vice plate means and is generally provided with its own supporting legs. Preferably one end of one of the vice means can be displaced to form a vertical vice plate. The vice plates are conveniently supported by sliding seats in U-shaped rails on he work bench surface and the vice plates can rotate on their sliding seats. A screw drive is provided for each sliding seat to move it forward or backward, so that the vice plates can be moved independently forward or backward.
Therefore, the three vice plates can be used together to grip various different types of object e.g. triangular bodies, round bodies and V-shaped bodies and it is especially suitable for gripping objects which cannot be clamped by conventional clamping benches or vices i.e.
non-uniform objects. The practicability and utility of the present invention is greater than conventional work benches. In a preferred embodiment a hole is provided in a corner of at least one vice means to receive a vice body which can be used to grip various objects, For example the vice bodies provided on the vice plates could be used to grip a pipe-like body by bearing against the inner surface of the body. This is unique to the present invention.
Conventional work benches with vice means only use two vice plate to grip objects, and are generally unsuitable for gripping round bodies, cylinders, triangular bodies or Vshaped bodies. They cannot be used to grip the inner edges of pipe-like cylinders. When gripping round bodies, cylinders and the like, applied forces are uneven in conventional work benches which gives rise to difficulties when working on the object e.g. on grinding, sawing, cutting, planing etc. If the object is not properly supported against the applied force it will cause inconvenience because the object may drop down. Conventional work benches cannot grip uneven objects adequately.
On the other hand, work benches of the present invention have practical and economical value in order to solve the above problems and can be conveniently and effectly used.
In the work bench of the present invention one of the vice means may be disposed vertically according to the shape of the object gripped, and this increases its practical use.
The work bench of the present invention may conveniently be operated by hand.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of non-limiting example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 is a partial cross-sectional view of a vicing device for use with the invention.

Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of one embodiment of the present invention. Work surface (1) comprises a triangular cut-away plate, at the lower edge of which are disposed legs (2) and between the legs (2) a plate (3) is provided for placing objects and various tools as desired. Vice means (4) are fixed on the centre line between the two corners of the work surface (1) at the U-shaped arch (5).
Fig. 2 shows a cross-sectional view of a vice means (4), wherein vice plate (6) has a triangular shape or other regular shape and is fixed at the lower surface to a U-shaped plate (7). In the middle of U-shaped plate (7) there is provided a round hole and U-shaped plate (7) is located on the upper edge of sliding seat (9) by screw or pin (8). Therefore, vice plate (6) may be rotated. Sliding seat (9) fits into a U-shaped rail (10), and is sleeved on a screw (11). Two ends of the screw (11) are supported by setting screw (12) and a rotary handle (13) is provided so that when handle (13) is rotated, vice plate (6) moves forward or backward.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a vicing and tightening body (14) which may be provided on plate (6). It comprises a cone (15) which is split so that it can be sleeved into a round hold on the plate (6). The V-shaped portion (16) can be used to grip and the triangular portion (17) can be used to, for example, bear against the inner edge of a cylinder.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of a vice means which may be provided at the mid point of one side of the work surface (1). It has a similar structure as Fig. 2, but its fixing method is different. As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, U-shaped rail (18) is fixed on the supporting plate (22) by pin (21), and supporting plate (22) is fixed on the work bench (1).
When wing bolts (20) are removed, the pin is used as a pivot to allow the vice means down, as shown in Fig. 7. In this position, vice plate (23) is vertical to the other two vice plates (6). The displaced vice means is sleeved in the U-shaped branch lever (24), and is fixed by wing screw (25). U-shaped branch lever (24) is pivoted on the legs, if it is not in use, it can be folded, as shown in Fig. 8.
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of another embodiment of the present invention, wherein the structure of the vice means is the same as shown in Fig. 2, but the three vice means are fixed on the work bench (1). The middle vice means cannot be displaced. If desires the vice means may alternatively be supported under the surface of the work bench (1). At the place of contact of the U-shaped rail (10) and the under-surface of the work bench (1), there is provided a slot in order to let screw (8) slide in the slot, that is, U-shaped plate (9) slides on the top surface of the work bench (1).
Figs. 10 and 11 show vice plates gripping a rectangular body, in which, the position of the rectangular body can be changed as required.
If it is to be planed or ground at the opposite end to the applied force direction, another vice plate may be used as a prop and therefore it is more convenient to work the object than with a conventional work bench. Applying force to a conventional work bench, will damage two sides of the rectangular body.
As shown in Fig. 12, it is an advantageous feature of the present invention that an uneven body can be supported by two-side edges of the vice plates or at a corner.
As shown in Fig. 13 a round body may be gripped at three points, so that force applied in working is spread and the round body will not be damaged.
A hollow cylinder or pipe-like body may be gripped internally as shown in Fig. 14. If, say, it is desired to grind the outer surface of the cylinder, the whole outer surface can be ground completely with a conventional vice only if held by one end then reversed, thus wasting time and labour. On the other hand the vice means of the invention utilises triangular cones to bear against the inner surface of the cylinder, so that time and labour can be saved- by grinding in one operation.
As shown in Fig. 15, a square body or e.g.
the leg of table, may be gripped by the Ushaped portion of the vicing and tightening body. If force is to be applied to the body, the vicing and tightening body of another plate can support the square body to resist the applied force.
Figs. 16 and 17 show views of a work bench of the present invention gripping a triangular body and a V-shaped body respectively; these kinds of object cannot be gripped by a conventional bench.
Fig. 18 shows a vice plate in which the outer edge is ringed by a rubber ring (27) which is wave shape and can grip tighter.
these kinds of objects cannot be gripped by a conventional bench.
Fig. 18 shows a vice plate in which the outer edge is ringed by a rubber ring (27) which is wave shape and can grip tighter.
