Abstract

In forming a longitudinal tubular conduit two tubes (1 and 1') are coupled together in end-to-end relationship. Tube (1) carries a flange (2) and tube (1') carries a flange (2'); the flanges (2 and 2') are longitudinally displaceable on their respective tubes and are interconnected by bolts (7). Each flange has a housing (5) which opens longitudinally towards the other flange and laterally towards its respective tube (1 or 1'). Mounted one in each housing (5) are sealing rings (3). Disposed between the flanges (2 and 2') is a tubular spigot (4) having opposed ends (6) which are received within each housing to compress the sealing rings (3). Each end of the spigot (4) has an outer peripheral frusto conical face (6A) which opposes a frusto conical face (5B) of the respectively adjacent housing (5) and during tightening of the assembly the opposed frusto conical faces (6A, 5B) move into engagement to restrict entry of the spigot into the respective housings, and thus to restrict the compression forces to which the sealing rings (3) are subjected and to locate the spigot (4) laterally with respect to the conduit (1, 1'). <IMAGE>
