Abstract

A clamp, particularly suited to friction welding machines, has jaw carriers 14, 16 slidable on a base 10. Secured to the base 10 is a fulcrum pin 34 mounting a lever 20. Actuator 12 is attached (e.g. by its piston rod) to pin 34 (whereby the thrust acts along a line intersecting the axis of the pin 34.) A bar 18 is attached to actuator 12 (e.g. to its cylinder) and at its other end pivotally to jaw carrier 14. Movement of bar 18 is transmitted to lever 20 which is also attached to jaw carrier 16. This construction reduces interference with operator actions at one side of the clamp and minimises bending of base 10. <IMAGE>
