Abstract

Lighting, systems of.-In a system of indirect lighting for football grounds, tennis courts &c. and for indoor lighting, the source of light is mounted in a hemispherical reflector 18 arranged adjacent to and at the centre of the bottom surface 9 of a diffuser 5 comprising a plane diffusing surface a to which are detachably secured at suitable angles a top surface 7 and side surfaces 8, the surface 9 being also detachable from the surface a. The diffuser is adjustably mounted by hooks 17 on bars 12 having lugs 13 through which pins are passed into holes 15 on uprights 16. The reflector 18 is also adjustably mounted on an upright 20 which is braced to the uprights 16 by rods 19. The diffuser is mounted on the supports 16, 19 at such a height that the bottom diffusing surface is not less than six or seven feet above the level of the ground or playing surface, and is preferably constructed of a wooden framing with canvas &c. stretched thereon and painted white. When used with tennis courts, the diffusers are arranged on extensions of the base lines so that the centre of the plane surface a of each diffuser is at a distance of 14 feet from the edge of the court and at an angle of 128‹ to the base line. Smaller diffusers may be also arranged one on each side of an extension of the net line and in line with the larger diffusers. In a modification for illuminating two tennis courts side by side, a single diffuser, Fig. 8, consisting of two surfaces 21 at angle of 120‹ and two endsurfaces at an angle of 140‹, is adjustably mounted on four supports, the reflector 18 with the source of light being mounted on one support below the diffuser. The apparatus may also be used for illuminating indoor courts or halls or for scenic or studio lighting.
