Abstract

22,944. Travers, C. Oct. 10. Respirators.-Respirators for use in mines &c. are provided with a receptacle for removing dust from the air inhaled, this receptacle containing a removable frame of serpentine formation, the walls of which are provided with a moistened substance and contain apertures to cause the air to travel by a sinuous path ; funnels are provided for insertion in the mouth and nostrils and are furnished with inlet and outlet valves. In the construction shown - in Fig. 1, the receptacle j contains a serpentine strip of metal the faces of which are covered with a moistened fabric such as wool ; by means of the perforations b<1>, the air is caused to take a sinuous course ; the air inlet b is covered with a dust-filter of canvas or the like. The receptacle j is connected to a funnel y for one nostril and to a funnel f for the mouth ; a second receptacle is connected to a fuunel for the other nostril and also to the mouth funnel f. The funnels y, f are provided with inlet valves i and outlet valves s', s<2>. In a modified construction, a single receptacle communicating with two nostril funnels and one mouth funnel is employed.
