Abstract
1529225 Electric resistance heating THERMONETTE APPLIANCES Ltd 12 March 1976 [13 March 1975] 10521/75 Addition to 1456684 Heading H5H [Also in Division H2] A heating panel which may be flexible e.g. a blanket, mattress, under carpet heater or pad, has a tortuously arranged single coil heating element 3 interlocated with a tortuously arranged, dual coil (i.e. two coiled wires) element 1, 2 selectively connectible with a power supply, (a) with one of the coils of the dual coil element in series with the single coil element, (b) with all three coils in series, (c) with all three coils in series with a rectifying diode, to give three levels of heating. The element 1, 2 comprises a resistance wire 1 wound on a rayon core, covered by polyethylene, wire 2 wound on the polyethylene and covered by P.V.C. Both wires have the same resistance, 320#. Element 3 has a resistance of 640#. The elements are described in a blanket provided with "tunnels" for the elements. The elements are connected via a multi terminal switch (Figs. 2-5 not shown) to a power supply. The switch gives the following heatgenerating current paths: low, resistors 1, 2, 3 and diode 8 all in series; medium, resistances 1, 2, 3 in series but diode 8 shorted out, the switch bridging terminals E and D'; high; resistances 1 and 3 in series, resistance 2 and diode 8 being shorted out by the switch bridging terminals C, E, D'. Heat generated is repectively 22À5, 45 and 60 watts. For safety, fuse F is rated such that overheating of the polyethylene insulation between resistances 1 and 2 permits it to melt and let the wires touch or pass a current that will cause the fuse to blow.
