Abstract

1517932 Portable containers AMERICAN CAN CO 12 Aug 1975 33467/75 Heading B8D [Also in Division B3] To secure a metal end closure 86 to a cylindrical can body 72, of metal or of a composite including a metal layer, in which the marginal portion of the metal body or layer at the open end is less than 0À0057 inches thick, so as to form a hermetic seal able to withstand 90 p.s.i. at 140‹ F. there is first formed at that end a curl the edge (50) of which faces the body, Fig. 4 (not shown). The closure, comprising a panel 86 surrounded by a wall 88 and a peripheral flange, has the flange bent round the curl, sealant 98 having been placed between the closure wall 88 and the inner surface of the open cam ends, to form a skirt 92 and hook 94, the hook edge 96 bearing on the end portion of the curl to compress the curl. The metal of the can body is aluminium on steel drawn and ironed or a foil inner layer 80 of a composite including Kraft paper board 82 and an outer label layer 84 of polyethylene, paper or foil which need not continue into the curl. The closure is attached, Fig. 18, using a chuck 108 and a rotating roller R moved radially inwards against flange 89. Many sealant compositions are given.
