Abstract

1505498 Radiography M BARBIERI 12 May 1975 [10 May 1974 8 Nov 1974] 20723/74 and 48378/74 Heading H4F X-ray apparatus for providing an X-ray image of a section of a body of the type described in Specification 1,283,915, wherein the body B is scanned by moving two X-ray sources 28, 29 and two X-ray detectors 30, 31 in the plane of the section, e.g. along parallel rails 33 and 34 which are also rotated with respect to the body, each source being adjacent a detector and opposite the other source, and the resulting X-ray absorption measurement output signal values from the detectors being stored and processed to form display data corresponding to a reconstructed image of the section. An additional pair of X-ray sources, detectors and rails may be provided, these addition rails along which the additional sources and detectors are moved being orthogonal to the first pair of rails (Fig. 4, not shown). Alternatively the two source/detector pairs may be mounted on a circular track and driven at the same speed and in the same direction around the track as shown in Fig. 5, the body B' being scanned being also moveable relative to the track. By scanning the body section with two X-ray source/detector pairs the signal-to-noise ratio of the information used to reconstruct the image of the body section is improved since the two absorption values obtained for each X-ray path through the body but from opposite directions are averaged. The output signals are processed according to a set of iterative reconstruction algorithms including simultaneous equations for forming a first memory matrix whose elements correspond to the densities of the corresponding areas of the reconstructed image, the processing also including the steps of permanently setting to zero all elements having negative values after each iteration and permanently setting all elements having a positive value larger than a predefined value to the predefined value after each iteration. In addition those elements of the first memory matrix whose values remain substantially unchanged for successive iterations are detected and their values permanently set to their value after the previous iteration. Second and third memory matrices may also be formed from the first memory matrix.
