Abstract

1480926 Absorbent pads KIMBERLEYCLARK CORP 13 Dec 1974 [20 Dec 1973] 53989/74 Heading A5R [Also in Division B5] An elongate, absorbent pad comprises a fluid pervious non woven cover sheet 12, an elongate, absorbent batt 17. of comminuted wood pulp fibres and a fluid impermeable backing element 19, all coextensive, the cover sheet 12 being secured to the batt by a layer of flexible adhesive over the entire surface, which does not penetrate into the batt and the cover sheet 12 and batt 17 being impressed with spaced, longitudinally extending, undulating line embossments 14 which intersect the pad edges at 15, leaving unembossed portions 16, the compressed areas 18 along line embossments 14 providing hydrogen bonding of the wood pulp fibres which prevents delamination in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the pad, the backing element 19, a thin plastics film, being adhered to batt 17 by a spaced pattern of adhesive on the upper surface of element 19, both sets of adhesive, i.e. between the batt and the cover sheet 12 and the backing element 19 respectively, attaching only the batt surface fibres to the respective sheets, the integrity of the batt being provided by the hydrogen bonding where intersected by the line embossments 14. A band of pressure sensitive adhesive 22, protected by a removable paper strip 24, is applied to backing element 19 to adhere the pad to the crotch area of an undergarment. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4, (not shown), a layer of lightweight synthetic sponge 20 e.g. polyurethane foam, is laminated to the backing element 19 to provide a high friction surface which assists in maintaining the pad in place in an undergarment.
