Abstract
1479074 Plate heat exchangers W J DARM 1 July 1975 [2 Aug 1974] 27777/75 Heading F4S In apparatus for heat exchange between liquids and/or gases comprising parallel, spacedapart heat exchange plates (e.g. 12, 14, 16, 18, 20) which may be corrugated (as shown) or flat, wherein each plate comprises longitudinal edges 26, 28 extending between opposite ends of the plate, the plates at their ends thereof have a transverse slit 22 and at each end of the assembly a divider plate 30 extends through the slits. Above and below the divider plates the plate ends are joined in pairs (e.g. by connectors 24) as shown in Fig. 1 such that alternate interplate passages such as 38, 42, 46 have their inlet ends located above one divider plate at one end of the plate assembly and their outlet ends located below the divider plate 30 at the other end of the plate assembly; whilst for the intermediate passages such as 36, 40, 44 the inlet and outlet ends are oppositely disposed, i.e. respectively below and above the divider plates. Spacing means between adjacent plates comprises conical projections 54, 56. The projections of adjacent plates preferably are in abutment as shown in Fig. 4. Spacer means at the plate edges comprises strips 48, Fig. 1, or 48<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, with recesses, Fig. 1, or channels, Fig. 2, which are slit to allow the plate edges to be passed through the slit wherein they are locked by crimping (Fig. 5). Sealing means at the plate edges comprises a layer 52 of synthetic plastics material which may be reinforced by glass fibre. Said layers 52 in the arrangement shown in Fig. 2 are bonded to the plates and also to the wall of a casing 50 containing the plate assembly.
