Abstract

1463069 Intumescent polyurethane foams DUNLOP Ltd 9 Oct 1974 [7 Nov 1973] 51753/73 Heading C3R A method for the production of a flexible, intumescent polyurethane foam comprises reacting together (a) a polyester polyol, (b) an organic polyisocyanate, e.g. tolylene diisocyanate, (c) a catalyst for the reaction of the polyisocyanate with active hydrogen-containing groups, and (d) a blowing agent, e.g. water, methylene chloride or trichlorofluoromethane, with a combination of (e) an amine carbamate derived from an amine having at least 2 primary or secondary nitrogen atoms and not containing any hydroxyl groups, and (f) an ammonium phosphate or a phosphate of an amine, the combination of (e) and (f) preferably being used in an amount of at least 10% wt. of polyol (a), and the weight ratio of (e) to (f) preferably being from 1 : 1 to 1 : 6. Suitable amine carbamates are derived from polyfunctional primary or secondary aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amines, hydrazine, or aromatic or heterocyclic amines. The reaction mixture may include a surface active agent. In the example a foam is prepared from (a) a diethylene glycol polyadipate, (b) 80 : 20 tolylene diisocyanate, (c) N-ethyl morpholine, (d) water, (e) ethylene diamine carbamate, (f) ammonium polyphosphate and an organosilicone surfactant.
