Abstract
1453055 Regulating IC engine fuel supply GKN TRANSMISSIONS Ltd 30 Jan 1974 [31 Jan 1973] 4763/73 Heading F1B A fuel injection apparatus includes metering means for determining the quantity of fuel delivered in each cycle of operation, the means comprising a metering piston 52 provided with grooves 52a-c which communicate with a drain 64, the piston 52 being oscillated by commutating device comprising a pair of relatively rotating parts 49, 50 in face-to-face contact having grooves 59, 60, Fig. 3, which communicate with the drain 64. The grooves prevent leakage between the ends of the metering piston, and between the fuel lines. One of the relatively rotating parts 49 is attached to a plate 48 which itself is attached and driven by a carrier 47. A spring (58) Fig. 2 (not shown) urges the plate 49 into contact with the other relatively rotating part, a metering block 50 which also houses the piston 52. High-pressure fuel is fed through an orifice a 1 in the carrier 47, b 1 and c 1 in plates 48, 49 to an orifice e 1 in the metering block 50. The orifices a 3 and a 5 are blocked by the metering block 50. Orifice e 1 communicates with one chamber s 1 of a metering cylinder. The pressure of fuel forces the piston 52 downwards which expels fuel contained in a second chamber s 2 . The expelled fuel passes into the plate 48 and through a distributing orifice d which is opposite a fuel line g 6 . Rotation of the carrier 47 allows fuel to flow through orifices a 5 , b 5 , c 5 and e 2 driving the piston upwardly to expel fuel from chamber s 1 through orifices e 1 , c 2 , b 2 , b 6 , d, f 5 and fuel line g 5 .
