Abstract

1452483 Turbines; reciprocating pumps MARTIN & BOTTING DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 21 May 1974 [31 May 1973] 26054/73 Headings F1A and F1T A turbine which will rotate in the same direction when fully immersed in a fluid-flow regardless of the flow direction comprises, Figs. 1, 2, feathering vanes 5 pivoted at or adjacent the periphery of a central member 3 arranged to prevent flow past the vanes through the region radially inwardly of the vanes. The fluid may be liquid or gas, possibly mixed with solids, or wind. As shown, central member 3 is star-shaped extending between end discs 6. Rods also extend between the latter to form pivots for bosses 7 at the ends of each vane 5. In the feathered position, the tip 10 of one vane engages the bosses 7 of the adjacent vane so that a gap is left along the major length of the tip, thus enabling the flow to assist pivoting of the vane towards the operative position. The latter is defined by stops 9 on end discs 6, or alternatively Fig. 10 (not shown) by the engagement of inwards extensions (40) on the vanes with the arms (36) of the central member (35). A stationary guide member (33), Fig. 9 (not shown) may direct flow to the turbine 1. The latter may be mounted in a Venturi-like portable housing 18, Fig. 8, so that when the housing is immersed in a flow of water the turbine drives a pair of reciprocating pumps 23 via cranks 24 and arms 25, the pumps drawing water from within the housing via openings 28 and delivering to a common pipe 32. Several turbines may be supported by a structure (11), Fig. 4 (not shown) across a river or tidal opening (12). A turbine may be mounted on a bridge (15), Fig. 5 (not shown) above the normal water level (16) to drive a flood warning siren should the level rise excessively.
