Abstract

1450986 Carboxylic acids and dicarboxylic anhydrides BASF AG 26 Feb 1974 [27 Feb 1973] 8550/74 Heading C2C In the process whereby carboxylic acids and/ or dicarboxylic anhydrides are prepared by the catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons in which the hydrocarbon is passed over the catalyst by means of an inert carrier gas containing oxygen, the nitrogen-free carbon dioxide which is formed in the oxidation is recycled and used as the carrier gas. Exemplified is the preparation of phthalic anhydride from o-xylene. The process may also be used to prepare phthalic anhydride from naphthalene, maleic acid or anhydride from benzene or C 4 hydrocarbons, and acrylic acid from propylene.
