Abstract

1445795 Gas and oil burners MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK 25 Feb 1974 [24 Feb 1973] 8437/74 Heading F4T A method of burning fuel to provide low concentrations of nitrogen oxide in the combustion gases, e.g. in boilers, furnaces and gas turbines, comprises mixing a first portion of the fuel with more air than is necessary for complete combustion and discharging the resulting lean mixture from at least one burner nozzle, mixing a second portion of the fuel with less air than is neccessary for complete combustion and discharging the resulting rich mixture from at least one further burner nozzle, and burning the two mixtures together. The fuel may be gaseous or light or heavy liquid fuel. The mixtures may also include an inert gas or liquid or recycled combustion products. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises several burners (1), Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), located adjacent one another and each comprising a central fuel supply duct (2a or 2b) and a surrounding air supply duct (3) discharging to a mixing chamber (4). The fuel supply rates are different for adjacent burners so that rich and lean mixtures are discharged through the adjacent nozzles to a common combustion zone. The burner nozzles have flame stabilizing baffles (5). Inert liquid, e.g. water, may be sprayed into each mixing chamber via respective spray nozzles (6<SP>1</SP>), Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown). A burner for heavy liquid fuel has a preliminary burning section 1<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 13, for atomizing and partially burning the heavy liquid fuel to form a gaseous fuel 14<SP>11</SP>, the section comprising a mixing chamber 21<SP>11</SP>, water vapour and heavy oil supply lines 8<SP>11</SP>, 9<SP>11</SP> and auxiliary gaseous fuel and air lines 5<SP>11</SP>, 6<SP>11</SP>; a cooling section comprising a tubular portion perforated at 13<SP>11</SP> for delivery of recycled combustion gas 11<SP>11</SP> into the hot gaseous fuel 14<SP>11</SP>; and a mixing section wherein air 12<SP>11</SP> is delivered through perforations 15<SP>11</SP> in plates 311, Figs. 13 and 14, to mix with the gaseous fuel flowing through passages 16<SP>11</SP> to combustion zone 23<SP>11</SP>. The number and/or size of the air-supply perforations 15<SP>11</SP> supplying each adjacent gaseous fuel passage 1611 is different so that the method of the invention can be achieved in a single burner. The plates 3<SP>11</SP> impart swirl to the air-fuel mixture to enhance mxing and stabilize the flame from a starting oil burner 17<SP>11</SP>. The cooling section may be omitted and instead water is injected into the hot gaseous fuel via nozzle (25<SP>11</SP>), Fig. 16 (not shown).
