Abstract

1441511 Bale openers PIEDMONT AMERICAN CORP 16 Sept 1974 [24 Oct 1973] 40220/74 Heading D1N A method of removing textile fibre from a bale comprises raking across a face of the bale while loosening fibres of the bale with repeated short quick strokes and while stripping a layer from the bale. Apparatus to perform this method has a rake with tines 20 which is supported adjacent a face of the bale with means to move the tines in repeated short strokes along a closed path, Fig. 3, while moving the tines across a face of the bale. The rake is located on a frame together with a second rake so that two bales are acted on simultaneously to loosen the fibres while reciprocation of the frame removes a fibre layer from each bale alternatively and deposits it on a conveyor 86. The tines are mounted on a system of levers operated by two eccentric discs, Figs. 9 and 10. The bales are supported on plates 95 which are incrementally raised with each traverse of the rakes. The plates with a bale are loaded into the apparatus on a trolley 96. A control circuit is illustrated, Fig. 15, (not shown), with contact switches to reverse movement of the rake carrying frame and operate raising of the bales. A plurality of such apparatus may be located along the fibre delivery conveyor 86 to produce a fibre blend.
