Abstract
1427318 Colour formers WIGGINS TEAPE Ltd 26 April 1973 [2 May 1972] 20270/72 Heading C4P [Also in Division D2] The invention comprises colour formers of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are H or optionally substiuted hydrocarbon radicals or both form withthe N atom a heterocyclic ring, T is an optionally substituted 1,2-phenylene or 1,2-naphthylene radical, Y is oxygen or -NR<SP>3</SP>-, wherein R<SP>3</SP> is H or an optionally substituted hydrocarbon radical; and ring A may optionally be further substituted, the compounds containing at least one water-solubilizing group other than a sulphonic acid group giving the compounds an ionic form, with the proviso that when Y is oxygen the water solubilizing group is not attached to ring A or ring T through a benzene ring. R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and/or R<SP>3</SP> are preferably optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl or aryl radicals. The ionic group may be anionic, e.g. carboxylic or sulphino. or cationic, e.g. -N<SP>+</SP>R<SP>4</SP>R<SP>5</SP>R<SP>6</SP>, where R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> are optionally substituted alkyl or form part of a heterocycle with the N atom, e.g. pyrrolidine, pyrroline, piperidine, morpholine, piperazine, pyrrole, pyridine or quinoline. The compounds wherein Y is oxygen are prepared by reacting a compound of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and A are as defined above with a compound R<SP>7</SP>O-T<SP>1</SP>, wherein R<SP>7</SP> is H or C 1 -C 5 alkyl and T<SP>1</SP> is an optionally substituted phenyl or naphthyl radical in presence of a condensing agent, at least one of the reactants containing a water-solubilizing group. Compounds wherein Y is -NR<SP>3</SP>- are prepared by reacting the compounds where Y is oxygen with a compound R<SP>3</SP>NH 2 in presence of a condensing agent, e.g. phosphorus oxychloride. The compounds are used in clean-to-handle copying systems.
