Abstract
1426906 Edge coating vitreous panels; spray-producers GLAVERBEL-MECANIVER 14 May 1973 [17 May 1972] 22792/73 Headings B2E and B2F [Also in Division E1] A panel 1, Fig. 1, comprising at least one sheet of vitreous material has at least part of its edge and the contiguous marginal zones protected by a channel-form protector 5 formed by applying to at least part of the edge and the contiguous marginal zones a fluid coating material which sets or is caused to set to form the protector and which undergoes shrinking before setting is complete to grip the vitreous material. The panel is preferably a double glazing or heat insulating unit (see Divs. E1, F1) coated round all its edges. The coating material may be p.v.c., polyester, polyvinyl acetate, nylon, P.T.F.E., ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer or a mixture of the copolymers, optionally together with fillers (e.g. wood, glass fibres, cement or aluminium powder) or crosslinking agents whereby the plastics may be polymerised or cross-linked in situ. The copolymers may contain polyterpene, paraffin wax, phenolic resin and a filler (e.g. clay, carbon black or quartz). The plastics material may be applied by spraying, brushing or dipping, as a dispersion or solution, but is preferably applied by extruding the plastics into the nozzle of a flame sprayer. An adhesive (e.g. γ-propyl dimethyl triethoxysiloxane) may be applied to the edge of the panel before the plastics. Alternatively, the protector, when set, may be removable. Where the panel is an insulating panel it is filled with polyurethane foam. Spray producers. A suitable spray assembly Fig. 6, comprises a head 42 to which molten plastics is supplied from a conduit 43, and from which plastics issues from a tube 44 into a nozzle 45 comprising a body 46 with a central boss 47 carrying an inner nozzle 48 fixed by a clamping ring 49 screwed on the boss 47. A conical shell 50 carrying an outer nozzle 52 is screwed onto the flange 51 of the body 46. In use, propane/oxygen mixture is supplied to a conduit 53 feeding passageways 56 in the inner nozzle 48, air is supplied to a conduit 57 feeding the space 60 between the inner and outer nozzles, molten plastics is supplied to the central bore 61 of the inner nozzle 48, and the gases are ignited.
