1418205 Making contact springs; rolling; shearing; welding by pressure STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 2 May 1974 [31 May 1973] 26001/73 Headings B3A B3R B3M and B3W A method of making contact springs comprises holding a contact billet between two springs, welding the billet to the springs, and forming the billet into separate portions so that each spring is left with a contact made from the billet. The welding is effected by passing an electric current through the billet and springs. In an embodiment, Fig. 7, a feeder unit A<SP>1</SP> feeds two prepunched springs 54, Fig. 9, from magazines B<SP>1</SP> to a transfer track C<SP>1</SP>. The springs are moved along the track by a feeding arm 55, Fig. 8, driven in orbital fashion by a crank 56. A guiding arm 58 is reciprocated by a connecting rod 59 to ensure accurate spacing and positioning of the springs. The springs pass between welding heads D<SP>1</SP>, and precious metal wire 63, 64 is fed from a unit E<SP>1</SP> at one side of the track at the welding heads. A flying cutter arm 67, having cutting wheels 68, 69, rotates about a pivot 70 to cut the wires above pockets in a billet carrier wheel 66. The wheel is indexed during cutting to feed the billets to the welding heads D<SP>1</SP>. A spring 54<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 9A, is welded to a corresponding spring beneath it via two contact billets 55, 56 to form springs 54<SP>11</SP>. The two springs are separated at a cutter station F<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 7, and the spring contacts are then carried at a coining unit G<SP>1</SP>. The individual spring contacts are then stacked on stems H<SP>1</SP>. In another embodiment, Figs. 1-4, 6 of the Provisional drawings (not shown), the springs are integral with the strip from which they are punched. The welding electrode tip (37) is driven in a closed loop by a cam arrangement (47), (48) which co-operates with pivotable beams (39), (42), (43) and a compression spring (46). Moreover, the precious wire is fed from several reels via a feeder (20) to a rotating feed turret.
