Abstract

1410698 Easy-opening containers AMERICAN CAN CO 5 Dec 1973 [14 Dec 1972] 56354/73 Heading B8D In a full-open easy-open metal container, comprising an end closure 10 seamed to a container body C and having a countersink wall 22, 18 circumscribing a panel provided with a removable section 12 defined by a score 14, the container body is formed with an inwardlyprotruding bead 46 and the end closure is provided with a bead 48 of plastisol or other soft pliable sealant material on the underside of the panel section 12, to protect a consumer from injury on the sharp edges of both the panel section and remaining panel rim portion 16 resulting from rupture of the score. As shown, the countersunk wall is of stepped configuration and bead 46 is spaced below the rim and protrudes to or beyond the centre of the score. Alternatively, the bead 46 may abut the rim 16 and extend short of the score centre. In a modification, the countersink wall is not stepped. A pull tab 28 is riveted to the removable panel section and has a nose portion 36 for initiating rupture of the score, which may be formed on the inner surface of the closure. The plastisol bead preferably extends to the outer radial edge of the score land 50 and has a thickness of at least that of the panel (i.e. 0À010-0À020 inch). Examples of suitable plastisols are given. The closure may be of aluminium, tinplate, or steel and coated with a primer, suitable examples of which are given.
