Abstract

1408886 Gripping tools IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 Nov 1972 [4 Nov 1971] 51294/71 Heading B4W A hand tool for drawing a membrane towards a frame member in the construction of a panel, e.g. a ceiling or wall panel comprising two frame members with the membrane suspended therebetween, comprises first engagement means 7, 8 shaped to engage the frame member, second engagement means 10, 12 shaped to engage the edge of the membrane and advancement means operable by a hand lever 16 to advance the second means 10, 12 with the membrane attached thereto incrementally towards the first means 7, 8 and corresponding frame member. The advancement means comprise a rod 25 which bears on a sliding block 11 (carrying the transverse bar 10 and upstanding members 12) and a pair of clutches which, as shown comprise spring loaded plates 26, 28 which in a tilted position grip the rod 25 but are movable relative thereto in the perpendicular position. The plate 26 serves to feed the rod 25 upon each successive operation of the lever 16 while the plate 28 prevents backward movement of the rod. Alternatively the clutches may consist of a ratchet and pawl arrangement or jamming cleats. If the frame member of a ceiling panel is secured close to a wall the tool may support itself by its own weight with the hook 8 of the jaw member hooked on to the frame member and the outer surface of the member 7 abutting the wall so that the operator's hands may then be released from the tool for fixing the membrane to the frame member.
