Abstract
1407113 Winch brakes A BRUSSELLE 10 Jan 1973 [12 Jan 1972] 1372/73 Heading B8B [Also in Division F2] A circular band brake for a rotary drum (e.g. a cable drum) 3 comprises a fixed support 1, a cylindrical rim 5 integral with the drum and a band 6 optionally provided with friction linings 7 passing around the rim; two connections are provided, one between end 8 of the band and the fixed support, and the other between the other end 19 of the band and the same fixed support; either of the connections between an end of the band and the fixed support can be selectively rendered inactive by a disengaging device, only one connection being active whilst the other is inactive. As shown in Fig. 1, a block 10 pivoted at 9 to end 8 is further pivoted at 15 to a piston-andcylinder device 11, 12, (the disengaging device) pivoted in turn at 13 to the support 1; the block 10 also supports a composite cylinder body 22, 26. End 19 is pivoted at 17 to a rod 16 having a slotted connection with a fixed pin 18 acting also as a pivot; end 19 is also pivoted at 24 to a traction rod 23 slidable in block 10 and acted upon by spring washers 21, or by pressure fluid above a connected piston 27. In one mode of operation, Fig. 1, pressure fluid is supplied beneath piston 11 so that it remains in the upper position shown. With pressure relieved above piston 27, springs 21 tighten the band by raising piston 27 and rod 23 while rod 16 slides freely on pin 18, leaving a clearance A. The degree of braking down to full release, may be controlled with high precision by admission of pressurized fluid above piston 27 because end 19, where the greatest tractive force occurs, is movable. In the second mode of operation, Fig. 3, pressure is relieved beneath piston 11, so rod 16 is able to slide down pin 18 and remain in its lowermost position while piston end 29 occupies an intermediate position in cylinder 12. With pressure relieved above piston 27, the brake now operates by downward pressure of springs 21 through the end of cylinder part 22, on (movable) end 8 while end 19 is fixed. In this mode the drum is effectively locked against rotation.
