1402671 Workpiece clamping F BRAUER Ltd 26 March 1974 [28 March 1973] 14899/73 Heading B3B A toggle clamp, e.g. for use in welding or machining operations; comprises a plunger 1 slidable linearly in a guide 2, two supporting members 8, 9 extending rearwardly therefrom parallel to the axis of thrust of the plunger and lying symmetrically on opposite sides of a plane which contains that axis and the axis of a pivot pin 16 in the end of the plunger, the rear ends of the supporting members 8, 9 being joined by a web 10 which carries a pivot pin 12 whose axis intersects the axis of thrust of the plunger and about which is pivoted a handle 11, and a link 14 being connected to the plunger at the pivot pin 16 and to the handle at a pivot 15 to form the toggle linkage. The supporting members 8, 9 and the web 10 may be an integral flame cut plate welded to the guide 2, and the guide may be attached, rotationally adjustable, to a bracket 5. Alternatively the supporting members, web, guide and bracket may be formed in an integral casting (Figs. 7-12, not shown). In this case the supporting members have part cylindrical facing edges to form a rearward guide for the plunger. The handle is bifurcated at 13 to straddle the web 10, and the link 14 is made up of two parts symmetrically placed on each side of the handle and plunger and connected by a single pivot pin 16 to the plunger and by a pair of pivots 15 to the handle bifurcation. The clamp may be used for push clamping, or pull clamping, in which latter case a hook-like claw may be screwed into the end of the plunger.
