Abstract
1400767 Liquid cargoes transfer SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSOHAPPIJ NV 18 July 1972 33556/72 Heading B8E [Also in Division B7] A single buoy mooring system for the transfer of fluid, e.g. oil, from a pipe-line 28 on the sea bed 4 to a ship 25 includes a slender buoy body 1 of great length and a superstructure 2 which is rotatable about a vertical axis, the superstructure 2 carrying a mooring line 26 wound on reel 23 and a hose 24 wound on reel 22, the hose 24 being connected by a pipe swivel 50, conduits 48, 49 and hoses 29 to the pipe-line 28, and the reels 22, 23 being acted upon by at least one counterweight. As described the buoy body 1 is anchored by twelve anchor chains 14 and includes a central shaft 8, fixed ballast compartments 9, water ballast compartments 10, trim tanks 11, buoyancy compartments 12 and a fender 13. The superstructure 2 is mounted on a turntable 18 and includes a helideck 20 and a mooring line trunk 27. The turntable 18 can be rotated by an electric motor 40 (Fig. 2) which operates automatically if the tangential force exerted by line 26 on the mooring line trunk 27 exceeds a predetermined value. The fluid connection between the pipe-line 28 and ship 25 is made by a pair of hoses 29, a pair of conduits 48, 49 extending up the central shaft 8, a pipe swivel 50 which is rotatable with the turntable 18, a further conduit (not shown') connected to the pipe swivel, and hose 24. A wire 60 is wound at one end on a reel 69 co-axial with mooring line reel 23 and at its other end on a reel (not shown) co-axial with hose reel 22. An intermediate portion of the wire 60 passes around a pulley 61 o which a counterweight 57 is attached. The ounterweight 57 keeps the hose 24 and mooring line 26 in equilibrium and also serves for coiling up the hose 24 and line 26 after the transfer of oil has been completed.
