Abstract

1399567 Underground cryogenic tanks OSAKA GAS CO Ltd and OHBAYASHIGUMI Ltd 12 April 1973 [24 April 1972 8 July 1972] 17607/73 Heading F4P An inground cryogenic tank comprises a roof cover 22 from which insulation 23 is suspended, an annular side wall 11, and a floor slab 12 comprising upper and lower floor slab portions 13, 14 separated by supports 15. The space 16 formed between the upper and lower portions 13, 14 and wall 11 is heated by heaters 17 so that the underside of portion 14 is at a temperature higher than that of the freezing point of the soil. Water can be pumped from beneath floor slab portion 14 and within an extension 11a of wall 11 via sand filters 18 and passage 20 to the bottom of a shaft 19 used for maintenance. This water can then be pumped to the ground surface. Wall 11 and floor slab 12 are made of concrete and the insulation is suspended by steel rods from cover 22. In alternative constructions (Figs. 3 to 5, not shown), the bottom floor slab portion is thicker and does not have interruptions to permit communication between its underside and space 16. Thus the extension 11a is not required, and the heaters may also be omitted if desired.
