Abstract

1399252 Push button switching systems POST OFFICE 17 May 1972 [19 May 1971] 15777/71 Heading G1N [Also in Divisions G4 and H4] A keyboard for use in a telephone instrument or other apparatus employs an electret to precharge the capacitance between the 'button' and a marker plate. In the embodiment described the keyboard comprises twelve buttons 1 formed as a one piece moulding of resilient plastics material. Beneath moulding 2 is a metal plate 6 having portions 9 which can flex downwards in a snap action manner when button 1 is pressed and return to the position shown when it is released. The metal plate 6 is spaced from electret 13 by spacers 11. The electret material, which may be p.t.f.e., is preferably heat fused to a matrix of conductors forming a marker plate and cold spray charged after fusion. The change in capacitance is detected by high impedance circuitry using MOS or JFET semiconductor devices. In a modification the electret may be attached to the moving button member. The electret material may be in the form of a film of p.t.f.e., fluorinated ethylene propylene (copolymer) or polypropylene.
