Abstract

1383251 Aerating liquids J V WORTHINGTON 11 Jan 1972 1329/72 Heading B1C [Also in Division Cl] Apparatus for aerating sewage comprises a pressure vessel 16 having a tangential inlet 28 for the liquid, gas diffusers 44 supplied from a manifold 40, and a gas venting pressure relief valve 52; the treated liquid is withdrawn from a well 68 by an outlet pipe 66. There is a drain 32 for any solids which may settle out. The liquid level 82 in the container is controlled by a float valve 76 which pneumatically actuates the outlet valve 72. The gas used may be air, oxygenated air, or pure oxygen, and excess gas may be vented to atmosphere or to the outflow sewer or, if rich in oxygen, recirculated. The apparatus may be provided at an intermediate pumping station in the sewage influent line (see Fig. 1, not shown) or at a sewage treatment station (see Fig. 2, not shown) having also a settling tank (112), sludge drying beds (138) and sludge recirculating means. In this case two pressure vessels (16', 16") may be provided in series, only the second having liquid level control means. Preferably the pressure in vessel 16 is 15 p.s.i. or more, the gas bubble size is 5 microns, and the residence time in the vessel is 12-25 minutes.
